Section 278 Works

Adopted highway alterations agreed with the local authority — accesses, footways, crossings and reinstatement, built to the highway authority’s specification.

Overview

Highway works, to the authority’s rules

Section 278 work is not just groundworks on a road. It is groundworks inside somebody else’s approval process, with their specification, their inspection regime and their timescales. The engineering is usually the easy part.

We work to the approved drawings and the authority’s specification, arrange the traffic management, and get the inspections booked so the works are signed off rather than left hanging.

The agreement is between you and the highway authority, usually with your consultant. We build the approved works and deal with the authority on the construction side — permits, traffic management, inspections and sign-off.

We do, to the approved plan, including permits, signing, lighting and guarding, and maintaining pedestrian routes through the works.

Often they have to be, and the authority may require it. Night and weekend working is priced against the permit conditions rather than assumed either way.

The authority inspects at defined hold points. We book those into the sequence so the works progress with sign-off rather than stopping to wait for it.

Yes. Adoptable roads and drainage inside a development follow the same principle: the authority’s specification, their materials and their inspection regime.
